J. Alfonso Colocho was born in San Salvador, El Salvador. He received his early art education from the San Salvador School of Fine Arts where he studied for three years under the instruction of the Spanish artist Valero Lecha. He later moved to Los Angeles, California and began creating commissioned mural work for local hospitals. He furthered his artistic education while attending the Otis Art Institute, as well as Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, where he studied under Mario Rueda for five years. As an Artist Member of the California Art Club, he has participated in juried exhibitions at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University and the Pasadena Museum of California Art. In 2004, one of his paintings was selected for the cover of the catalogue that accompanied the exhibition, "Spiritual Spectrum: Paintings and Sculptures by the California Art Club", shown at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angeles in Los Angeles.
