Alexis Podchernikoff was born into a family of artists in Vladimir, Russia 1886. He first studied art with his grandfather Dmitri Zoltarieff and later with Ilya Repin and Verestchagin. Although he was an award-winning artist in Moscow, he emigrated to the United States after the Russo-Japanese War in 1905 and settled in San Francisco. He became well known for his landscapes painted in the manner of Corot. His last years were spent in Pasadena, California where he died in 1933 of tuberculosis. His works are held in the Oakland Museum and with the Royal Art Commission in Moscow. |
